Habitat’s mission isn’t just about building new homes — we also provide affordable repairs in partnership with existing homeowners and aim to preserve vibrant, healthy public spaces. And our Housing and Community Services team has been busy this past month doing just that.
In Logan Heights, volunteers completely removed and rebuilt a deck that had suffered extreme wood rot and water damage, which was making it unsafe and unstable for the current homeowner. Volunteers contributed over 100 cumulative hours across five days to make it happen, and the cost of all materials was offset thanks to funding through the Promise Zone Initiative.
At Cantebria Senior Homes in Encinitas, volunteers from Chase Bank spent the day building raised garden boxes in their outdoor communal space and retrofitting existing ones to be taller and easier to access. The residents were so appreciative — about a dozen came out to express their gratitude throughout the day — and we know they will be put to good use.
