Alberto and Margarita and their three children, Monserrat (14), Alberto Jr. (12), and Leonardo (7), have lived with Alberto’s sister for the past seven years. Alberto has worked for BAE Systems for over ten years. Margarita is a stay-at-home mom. Monserrat and Alberto Jr. are excellent students. Leonardo just entered second grade.
In his sister’s home, Alberto and his family live in her garage. He has turned the garage into two rooms. Their living space is immaculate and Margarita has tried to make the two rooms welcoming. However, there is an additional refrigerator in the garage and canned and dried foods are tucked into a corner. In the winter, air easily enters through the garage door. Additionally, police helicopters can often be heard overhead and strange men are often seen walking around the neighborhood. The children are not allowed to play outside. Alberto and Margarita long to provide their family with a peaceful and secure place to live.
Margarita first heard about San Diego Habitat for Humanity from her English instructor. She encouraged her husband to attend an applicant orientation. The Moreno family is so excited about owning their own home. They have friends from church who would help them to complete their sweat equity hours. Owning a home would change their lives completely.
