Roger and Veronica and their three children, Bill (13), Kenneth (10), and Bianca (5), have lived in Roger’s brother’s garage for the past two years. Roger has worked as a janitor for San Diego Community College District for over twelve years. Veronica is a stay-at-home mom and an active volunteer at her children’s schools.
The garage the family lives in has less than 300 square feet. Roger and Veronica share the bottom bunk bed, Kenneth has the top bunk, Bianca sleeps in a small bed, and Bill sleeps on a couch. The family moved into the garage when the rent in their previous apartment increased to over $1,000. In Roger’s brother’s garage the family pays $600 each month in rent.
Roger and Veronica made the decision to move into the garage with the plan to save money for college. Roger and Veronica deeply desire that their children attend college and experience great success. However, as the children are growing up, it is clear that the family needs more space. Though the family is close and loving, more room would allow the family to flourish.
Veronica first heard about San Diego Habitat for Humanity from one of our partner families who also volunteers at her children’s school. She encouraged Veronica to attend a homeowner orientation. The family is so excited about owning their own home, knowing it will change their lives completely.
