FY20 ANNUAL REPORT
DEAR HABITAT SUPPORTERS,
When FY20 began, we at Habitat were brimming with excitement and energy about ramping up our homebuilding and repair efforts. They were carefully prepared and coordinated — according to our strategic plan. We were in full swing when…well. By mid-March, 2020, the coronavirus had brought us to a screeching halt. Keeping our staff and supporters safe and healthy was of the utmost importance, so we closed our doors, our stores, and our sites.
Thankfully, construction was categorized as an essential service during the shutdown, and we were able to inch forward, albeit without our dedicated volunteers on the sites. We put new health and safety protocols in place that allowed us to continue work on new Habitat homes in Logan Heights, where we sold the final three homes in the 11-home community in November. In Encinitas, we laid the foundations for two new homes that will be ready for families to move in this year. We were also able to continue some exterior repairs on the homes of our beloved veterans, through our Veteran Home Repair program.
And you found ways to show up. You showed up by writing checks, making masks from Habitat t-shirts, doing data entry from your homes, pivoting with us as we took our events virtual, and in many other creative and thoughtful ways. It is because of your support and our collective passion for serving our future homeowners that this year, we remained…undaunted.

As most of us stayed home this year in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, we reflect on the fact that not everyone in our community has that same privilege — too many of our neighbors don’t have access to safe, stable homes. The housing crisis in San Diego rages on, and that’s why we remained determined in our efforts to build and sell affordable homes.

We spend money on construction materials and other supplies, the businesses we frequent spend money on employees, and finally, those employees spend money in our local economy. This ripple effect infuses cash into our community and multiplies our original investment, generating meaningful impact.
